The world is dying; it has been since it formed. We woke to a cold slap on the butt (actual or metaphorical) and were handed one big question: “Why?”

Luckily for most people, they’ve forgotten the question and have found other things to fill the time while waiting for death to return them to wherever it is we all come from. Things like commerce, property, sports, fine dining, and war help pass the time for these individuals. And, without a shred of awareness of the absurd, they pursue and enjoy them.

Then there are the few, the very few, who dare to tackle the big questions. Not the ones about how to live longer, or when they can next crash the stock market again, but big questions about the tiny, tiny things that make up the universe. Other than an occasional press release extolling the discovery of an indistinguishable middle piece of a jigsaw puzzle that stretches between two infinite points and rests on a table with no dimensions whatsoever, we hear very little from these sponge-heads. As Douglas Adams says: “Mostly harmless.”

But what about those who think that there’s plenty to get done here on earth, and very little of it has to do with scored goals, wry investments, or car dealer rebates? Well frankly, if you’re one of them, and as there’s no place in this world entertaining enough for you, we might as well hang around on this choking planet together. We’ll have a bad influence on one another, occasionally wash each others hair, eat some low-pudge fudge—and, if we have the time, take a funny look at all the people who are stupider than us.
